Mixology 101: DC

2 Jul

Every Natural guy/girl has a little phase where decide to experiment with mixing their own hair products, mainly DCs and moisturizers. I’m no stranger to this fad so as promised I’ve decided to share my DC recipe with you all. At some point I’ll update this post to include a video tutorial on mixing it, showing what the consistency should be like.

You will need:

  • Extra Virgin Olive Oil [EVOO]
  • Honey
  • Your favorite conditioner [I use Giovanni's Smooth As Silk Deeper Moisture Conditioner]
  • Plastic fork for mixing
  • Microwave safe storage container for mixing and storage

Now that you have all of that… Here we go!

  1. Measure and pour 1/4 cup of honey into your container; microwave for no more than 20 seconds, or until heated. *This step can be skipped for the following reason: honey naturally contains hydrogen peroxide, which can lighten the hair over time. If you want to achieve highlights in this way then heating the honey is not necessary*
  2. Mix in 1/4 cup of EVOO; blend well with fork.
  3. Mix in 1/2 cup of conditioner; blend well with fork.

The consistency of this mixture should be similar to that of a very creamy conditioner.

Now that everything’s all mixed in…

  1. Apply DC to freshly washed hair, wet hair. *This can be applied to hair that is sectioned*
  2. Comb through with a wide-toothed comb for even distribution.
  3. Cover with a plastic cap and allow to sit for as long as you want; I usually go for 4 hours.

Here are some pictures of my hair during and following the treatment:

My hair feels absolutely amazing after I rinse out the DC. Each ingredient used has a different property that makes my DC effective. I will put up a post sometime in July about the properties of each one. In the meantime try this out and share your results! =.)

Photo Opp: To BC… and Beyond

30 Jun

I’ve been kinda busy lately [I will tell you why later] and as a result have been neglecting to check my email… but when I finally got to it BOY did I find a treasure. My friend Jessica went Natural almost 2 years ago in July 2008. She submitted a picture to me of her BC and oh my! it was a BIG CHOP! Since then her hair has grown tremendously and is SO BEAUTIFUL! Whether she knows it or not she was actually one of my inspirations to go Natural. Here are pictures of her before and after her BC:

5 Months Nappy!

22 Jun

I haven’t really done much in the way of documenting my hair growth or Nappy milestones since I started blogging… BUT today is my 5 MONTH NAPPIVERSARY! 5 months ago today my bestie and I randomly bought sheers and chopped off my relaxed ends. YAY!!!

I’ve decided that on the 22 of every month I will post a picture with a length check showing my hairs growth… Maybe this will give me an opportunity to see the rate of growth I see.

And here’s a fun pic of me that i decided to take with my favorite mini twists:

Happy Nappy Milestone to ME!

Length: 7 inches

(+/- in inches since BC): 2.5 inches

In Pursuit of The Puff

16 Jun

Recently I had a young lady comment on a photo of mine, telling me that she loved my puff and asking how long I’d been Natural. After telling her 13 and a half months she realized that she had a LONG way to go, only being Natural for a month. Not letting time deter her from her goal she’s still in pursuit of the puff. While our convo was pretty random it reminded me of the way I was in the beginning of my journey. I randomly search through Natural hair albums on Fotki, search Natural hair blogs and even watch youtube videos to see how other Natural were wearing their hair and how it’d grown over time. Of all the hairstyles that I observed, the puff was most mesmerizing. I wasn’t necessarily impressed with how long someone’s hair had grown, but how BIG it was. And the puff was definitely a showcase of height following the ‘fro of course. The bigger the puff, the longer it seemed you were in the game as far as being Natural. I was obsessed.

Looking back at pics that I’ve taken since my BC in January I’ve noticed that my puff has grown a considerable amount. To me my puff was like a relaxed girl’s ponytail so of course I was proud to see how “long” mine had gotten. Here are a few pics that kinda show that growth:

My favorite: Afro Puffs!

My Puff now!

My hair has definitely come a LONG WAY in these last 5 months… I mean by no measure am I Rapunzel but in the Nappy world I have something to be proud of =.)
